Kongfu Dumpling Hospitality Fitout: A Masterclass in Red Ceramic
When designing a fast-paced hospitality venue inside a busy shopping centre, the fitout has to work twice as hard. It needs to draw the eye from across a crowded food court, communicate the brand identity instantly, and stand up to the heavy daily wear of a commercial servery. For the new Kongfu Dumpling location in Kawana, Queensland, the team at Total Fitouts achieved all three by anchoring the design in a bold, dual-tile ceramic feature wall.
By pairing two distinct 300x300mm satin ceramics from COCO Tiles and Mosaics, the designers created a space that feels deeply rooted in traditional aesthetics but executed with sharp, modern precision — a project that captures exactly why ceramic remains the material of choice for high-impact retail and food-court fitouts.
Project: Kongfu Dumpling, Kawana, QLD
Customer: Total Fitouts
Project type: Hospitality fitout (food court tenancy)
Featured tiles: Little Lady Series Red Dress Satin 300x300mm Ceramic Tile & Spanish Country Series Summer Celebration Satin 300x300mm Ceramic Tile
The Hero Wall — Little Lady Red Dress
The defining feature of the Kongfu Dumpling tenancy is its expansive, deep red servery wall. To achieve that immediate, brand-defining colour hit, Total Fitouts specified the Little Lady Series Red Dress Satin 300x300mm Ceramic Tile — a 9.1mm-thick rectified ceramic finished with a soft satin glaze.
The Little Lady Series is inspired by traditional Cuban tiling, a tradition that built its reputation on rich, saturated colour and bold, confident pattern. The Red Dress colourway delivers that same earthy, dramatic warmth, with intentional shade variation in the glaze that catches the overhead track lighting and gives the wall a hand-crafted, almost lacquered quality. Importantly, the designers laid the tile in a clean stacker-bond (straight grid) layout rather than the more familiar offset pattern. The straight grid simplifies and modernises the colour, draws the eye horizontally along the menu boards, and creates the crisp vertical seam that frames the illuminated Kongfu Dumpling logo.
The Graphic Accent — Spanish Country Summer Celebration
To break up the field of red and create a sculptural focal point at the collection end of the counter, the design introduces a vertical graphic panel using the Spanish Country Series Summer Celebration Satin 300x300mm Ceramic Tile.
This tile is a masterclass in dual-design geometry. Each square pairs a cream half-moon against the same burgundy-red base used on the hero wall, and because the design is symmetrical, individual tiles can be rotated and mirrored to form entirely new shapes — full circles, vesica piscis lenses, hourglass forms or chevrons — without ever needing a custom cut. At Kongfu Dumpling, the tilers laid them to form a stacked column of full circles, producing a Mediterranean-inspired geometric mural that reads as deliberate, custom artwork. Because both the Little Lady and Spanish Country series share the same 300x300mm footprint, similar body thickness and satin glazed surface, the two products sit perfectly flush against one another and read as one continuous architectural feature.
Designed for Commercial Wear
Behind the bold visual story, both featured tiles are quietly engineered for the demands of a commercial fitout. Both are rated for residential and commercial walls and floors, both are rectified for tight grout joints, and both are fired to a glazed, P1 surface that is easy to wipe down at the end of a busy service — an important practical consideration for any fast-casual food vendor working with sauces, soy and steam. Choosing pieces from the same size family also reduces installation risk: the trades only have to set up once for one body size, one grout joint and one substrate.
Grounding the Design
The brilliance of the Kongfu Dumpling fitout is its balance. The intense red ceramic and the traditional red Chinese lanterns are grounded by the dark ribbed timber-look counter front, the matte black archway and the pale terrazzo-look flooring of the Kawana centre. It is a space that feels energetic and welcoming, and it proves that commercial tile design can be both highly durable and rich in character — exactly the brief you want a hospitality fitout to deliver.
